GVEA President & CEO Brian Newton announces resignation

Brian Newton has resigned as President & CEO of Golden Valley Electric Association, effective immediately.

Brian plans to pursue opportunities in the Lower 48. He and his wife Michell are both natives of Nebraska, and have expressed a desire to be closer to family.

In addition to overseeing operations at the co-op, Brian has been actively involved in the community. He is a board member of the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of the Tanana Valley. He also is an adjunct professor with the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Management.

“Over the past four and a half years I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most dedicated, professional employees in the power business. I wish them the very best,” said Brian.

The board will hire an executive search firm to fill this position. In the meantime, the board of directors has appointed Cory Borgeson as interim President & CEO. Cory serves as GVEA’s corporate attorney. He’s a partner in Borgeson & Kramer, a Fairbanks law firm.

“On behalf of GVEA’s Board of Directors we extend our sincerest appreciation to Mr. Newton,” said Bill Nordmark, chairman of the board. “We wish him and his family continued success in their future endeavors whatever those may be.”

“During this transition period, GVEA will remain committed to its core principles of providing reliable, efficient and affordable electricity to the cooperative membership,” said Bill.

Ed Davis says:

I attended the protest/counterprotest, and wrote the following letter to the editor, check out the following News Miner weblink:

http://newsminer.com/view/full_story/18914196/article-Lacey%E2%80%99s-legacy?

I talked to Brian at the protest, told him I supported his efforts on the Eva Creek wind farm, and his efforts to enable a community food coop in the old Carrs Foodland. I also told him we would continue to disagree respectfully on the core issue surrounding his efforts to organize a protest at the Northern AK Environmental Center. With respect to Brian’s salary, no doubt it’s a drop in the bucket given GVEA’s total budget.

But let’s not take our eye from the primary issue surrounding Brian’s protest. GVEA bitterly opposed Healy Clean Coal Plant throughout much of its history. GVEA’s reasons for opposing HCCP have not changed, the economics were, and still remain, a horrible investment of ratepayer and taxpayer money – return on investment has steadily declined ever since the early 1990′s, due to ever-escalating cost over-runs. Guy Cameron says:

Sorry to see him go. He didn’t create the Healy coal plant issue he inherited it with the job. From what I can tell he spent the last 4 years trying to put the train back on the tracks. He was able to come to an agreement with the state but did not agree to the environmentalist’s demand to agree to end all GVEA coal generation before we knew that we had other affordable source of power.

I am disappointed that the leadership of the Northern Environmental center have chosen to intentionally use misinformation in their attacks. Misinterpretation of the salary disclosure form. Misunderstanding of ways rates are established to get approval of the state regulators.

I don’t know how anyone can keep ahead of an opponent that sees no need for the truth.
