Good news for electric ratepayers; Golden Valley has the keys to Healy Unit 2. The coal-fired power plant is expected to help stabilize electric rates which have fluctuated with the oil market over the past several years.
Thursday, December 12 @ 10:50 a.m. – Weather Service is indicating winds may pick up tonight through Thursday evening. Members may experience blinking lights due to snow or ice offloading from power lines or trees hitting power lines.
Tuesday, December 10 @ 8 a.m. – All members who have reported outages caused by yesterday’s heavy snowfall are back online. The only outages remaining are a few members on Chena Hot Springs Rd.
Monday, December 9 @ 7:30 p.m. – Thousands of GVEA members have been affected by today’s power outages. Farmers Loop, Steese Highway, Chena Hot Springs Road, North Pole and South Fairbanks were hit the hardest.
This month, GVEA linemen are making a concentrated effort to assess these trees. Our right of way crews, who usually have the winter off, have been called back in to assist.
As of Thursday morning, November 21, all members who reported outages caused by last week’s winter storm were back online. Lots of snow (and heavy snow at that) has caused some recloser action in GVEA’s service territory. Recloser actions happen when snow offloads from the power lines causing them to slap together.
A member receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a GVEA employee. The caller tells the member that their power will be turned off immediately unless payment information is given. The caller is trying to obtain personal financial information. It’s a scam.
